Global EV sales in June 2025: mostly in line; but US numbers falling faster than expected

  • The new figures for June 2025 confirm previous forecasts for the year. The market for electric cars could grow by 25% compared to last year. China remains the growth driver, followed by the EU and other markets, particularly the UK.
  • The only outlier is the US, where the latest figures point to a sharp decline this year.
  • USA
    • In June, the expected slowdown started. The number of 113,000 new EV (93,700 BEV and 19,800 PHEV) was significantly lower than in May (127,300 EV).
    • We currently expect the weak period in June to continue into the summer. We have lowered our forecast for 2025 to -7%, compared to 2024.
  • China
    • In June, 1.11 million new EV entered the market. The term ‘entered the market’ is deliberately vague, as it appears that some EV included in the sales statistics are still unsold at dealerships. Even high discounts are currently not enough to shift the excess capacity of EV manufacturers to end consumers.
    • This problem is even more pronounced in the ICE market. The situation could even worsen from September onwards when some central government subsidies expire.
    • At the moment, however, sales figures are still rising sharply. In June, EV accounted for 53% of the total market. We are sticking to our forecast of +25% for the whole year.
  • EU
    • In the EU, 263,000 new EV were sold in June 2025. That was 22% more than a year ago. The market thus remains on the rise, albeit after a very weak previous year.
    • The figures for the first half of 2025 are 21% higher than for the same period last year. We are therefore sticking to our forecast of +25% for the year as a whole.
  • Global development and RoW (Rest of World)
    • An overview of the smaller EV markets (world excluding China, EU, USA) is not yet available. They account for just under 20% of EV sales.
    • Hereof, just under a quarter is accounted for by the UK alone. The upward trend continued steeply in June. Overall, the British EV market grew by 33% year-on-year in the first half of 2025!
    • All in all, there is little reason to change the previous global forecasts for the year as a whole. At the moment, the figures for 2025 continue to point to a stable increase of 25% compared to the previous year.
